As time passes the door handle could become loose or feel loose. It could also begin to look aged and worn. This is a sign that it's time to replace your door handle.
One of the first signs that your door handle requires replacing is if it's becoming difficult to operate. This is a serious issue because you won't be capable of locking or unlocking the door which could put you and your family at risk.

Modern door handles are generally standard sizes and will fit any door. If you're not sure whether your new door handle will work, try removing the old one and measuring its housing holes. This will let you purchase the right size door handle.
The easiest method to take off the handle from your door is to unscrew it from the door itself. This is typically done with the screw driver. However certain door handles come with the cover plate which hides the screws that mount them, so you'll need to pry off this cover plate to get access to the screws underneath. After you have removed the old handle, make a note of the way in which the spindle is connected. This will assist you in aligning the new handle.
You can also remove the door handle by unscrewing the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver to remove the door handle. However, you'll need to locate the small latch which is located on the edge cut piece. After removing the latch, unscrew the handle and strike plate. Then, you can remove the latch from the door's edge.

You'll need to replace the latch plate when you replace the handle. It's the plate that holds the hole where the latch for the door is inserted when the door is closed. The packaging that the new handles arrive with will offer two different latch plates - either a rectangular or a circular one (see the diagram above for door handle parts). If you have a rectangular latch plate, you can replace it with a round one. This will allow the latch to hook onto the strike plate, making the handle easier.
The first step is to take off the screw that holds the old latch plate. These screws are often tight, and may require some force to loosen. If possible, it may be helpful to have another person assist with this part.
After the screws are removed, the latch plate should pull out of the door easily. If it's stuck or won't move, use a small nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This will sometimes free the plate.
Now, you can proceed to creating the new door strike plate to be installed. Using the screws made of wood that were included with your new handles, screw the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Don't over tighten your screws as this can damage the strike plate.
If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in the correct position, try closing and then opening the door to determine whether it latches and closes correctly. If not then you'll need to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down or forward or back until the door locks correctly.
If the door is still moving or jiggling, you may need to enlarge the latch hole in the strike plate. This is more common on older doors. It can be caused by wear and tear hinges that are too narrow, the wrong size latch or damaged strike plate. If this is the case, follow the same procedure to adjust the strike plate, using an iron file instead of the hammer and chisel.
Remove the Latch
The latch is the angled metal piece that slides in and out of the hole on the inside edge of your door. The latch is moved forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into the door's frame so that the door stays closed. If your door is wobbling when you close it, replacing the latch could be the only thing needed to correct the issue.
It's difficult to see the screws that attach the latch to the door, but there's usually a small slot on the trim plate that permits you to insert a screwdriver into the slot and remove it. After taking off the trim plate you will be able to pull off the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it, as well as the spindle.
If the latch doesn't easily release you can try using an old-fashioned paper clip or tool to spring it loose from the handle mechanism. Place the item into the recessed latch slot, and gently twist it or jiggle until the that the latch and handle are beginning to separate. You may need repeat this process a few times before you can remove the latch.
You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without issues after you've removed the old one. Use the new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is properly positioned in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.
Before installing the new handle, make sure to measure your existing backset (the distance from the center of the big hole on the front of the door to the edge). Also, ensure that the latch size on the new handle is a good match to the measurement of your existing handle.
